Polar Bears represent local YMCA at New Englands

CAMBRIDGE –  The Polar Bears of Pittsfield YMCA had a banner couple weekends out at MIT this month.

The youth swimming program at the local Y sent 16 swimmers to the New England Championships over the last two weekends and came away with some real hardware.

“Most swimmers recorded personal best times over the past two weekends, with over 70 YMCAs participating from New England,” said Head Coach Cathy Cybulski. “I was so super proud of all these kids. 100-percent effort and hard work really showed.”

10-year-old Mia Zucculo brought home the best finish of any Berkshire County swim- mer, placing second overall in the 50 breaststroke. She timed in at 38.57 for the runner-up prize. Zucculo also managed a pair of ninth-place finishes in the 100 breaststroke (1:28.25) and a personal best in the 100 IM with a time of 1:17.66.

Joining Zucculo with three place-finishes was 12-year-old Sam Cybulski. The youngster’s top race was the 200 free, which saw him score ninth in 2:13.51, a personal best. Cybulski had his best performance across the board at New Englands, also recording a 1:00.5 in the 100 free for 13th and a 27.5 in the 50 free for 16th.
